Simply put, a firewall is a computer network security system that functions to protect computers from various types of attacks from outside computers. Firewall monitors and controls all incoming and outgoing network traffic that you do based on established security rules.

In general, computer firewalls are software programs that prevent unauthorized access to or from private networks. So, a firewall is a tool that can be used to improve the security of computers connected to the network, such as LAN or the Internet.

How the firewall works
When your computer has firewall protection, everything in and out of the computer will be monitored. Firewalls monitor all information traffic to allow 'good data' to enter, and block 'bad data' from entering the computer. Firewall uses one or more of the three methods below to control the traffic flowing in and out of the network: 
  1. Package filtering. Packages (small pieces of data) are analyzed against a set of filters. Packages that pass through filters are sent to the requested system, while other packages are discarded. Proxy service. 
  2. Information from the Internet is taken by a firewall and then sent to the requested system and vise versa. Stateful inspection. A newer method that does not check the contents of each package but compares certain key parts of the package with a trusted information database. 
  3. Information from inside the firewall outside is monitored to determine specific characteristics, then the information entered is compared to these characteristics. If the comparison produces a reasonable match, the information is allowed to enter. If not, discarded.
